Over the years, I have often viewed Summer Services from the perspective of risks and safety. The following questions have come to my mind: What makes for a good service experience? What creates a feeling of safety and brings peace of mind? How do I myself prepare for the trip to Summer Services?
Expectations for Summer Services are often ordinary, yet meaningful: I assume that a place to stay will be found and that those arriving will be guided to where they need to go. I can move around the service area safely and with peace of mind, and at night I can sleep undisturbed. Another basic expectation is that everyday needs are taken care of: there is enough food, and communication connections work. Even payments go smoothly with modern tools. I can trust that the organizers have done their best.
It is also important that during Summer Services one can quiet down and listen to God’s word in the large tent or elsewhere in the service area, even while lying on the grass with one’s eyes closed. In a spiritual sense, safety also means trusting that God will take care of us.
Summer Services are also a place for many encounters. We can meet one another with joy and openness, just as we are. Together, we can experience the strengthening of faith and fellowship. A sense of community is part of the service experience. It is heartening to see that people care for one another, from babies to the elderly. Caring can be something as simple as the whole family gathering together for lunch. It is also important that children and young people know when they should be back at their own place of accommodation in the evening.
It is often said that safety is a feeling, and that is truly what it is. It is a personal experience that guides our thinking and actions. A sense of safety creates the foundation for how we act in different situations. Although structures and arrangements are important, the experience of safety often grows out of small things, such as interaction between people. Each of us has our own role in building safety. Through my own actions, I can take others into consideration and strive to follow the instructions that have been given.
I can also influence the atmosphere in my encounters with others by being gracious and constructive. In addition, I can stop to consider what kind of message I am passing on: am I bringing forward what is good, gratitude and trust, or am I spreading worry and uncertainty? Even small words can have a great impact.
Each group of Summer Services organizers, in their turn, has taken care to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible in the service area. Their task has been to make sure that the services function well and that safety matters have been taken into account throughout the area. They have also prepared for possible disruptions, so that the safety of Summer Services guests can be cared for even in those situations. Safety is increasingly built on the ability to anticipate, prepare and work together.
Perhaps the most important question is not what kind of setting has been arranged under field conditions, but what kind of mind I bring with me. The most precious moments are often the small ones, when the thought arises: “Lord, it is good for us to be here.”
